Mistake 1: Not Having a Plan

Whether you are planning a full kitchen remodel or buying a new sofa, start with a plan. Know the size of the space, how it will function and how you want it to feel, including materials, colors and lighting. This narrows your options quickly.

For example, if you want a lighter, brighter kitchen, talk with a designer about removing a wall, adding or enlarging a window or installing a skylight, and focus on light cabinets, counters and walls. Save photos of rooms you love to guide you or your designer. Once you have several favorites, stop looking, or you may run into mistake number two.

Mistake 2: Information Overload
